Expert Tree Pruning in Ontario

Healthier trees, better structure, and improved curb appeal. We follow ISA best practices on every cut.

Tree pruning done the right way

Good pruning is one of the best long-term investments you can make in your trees. Done right, it improves their health, strengthens their structure, reduces storm risk, and keeps them looking beautiful for decades. Done wrong — with bad cuts, topping, or over-thinning — pruning can permanently damage a tree and shorten its life.

At River Oak Tree Service Ltd, our Ontario tree pruning service follows International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) best practices on every job. We prune for the tree, not against it.

When to prune your trees

Most deciduous trees in Ontario are best pruned in late winter or early spring while they're dormant — that timing reduces stress, encourages strong spring growth, and makes structural problems easier to see. There are exceptions: oaks should generally be pruned outside of April–July to avoid oak wilt risk, and certain ornamentals are best pruned right after they bloom.

That said, dead, broken, or hazardous limbs can — and should — be removed any time of year.

Types of pruning we provide

  • Deadwood removal: Eliminates falling-limb hazards and improves the tree's appearance.
  • Crown thinning: Selectively removes interior branches to improve light, airflow, and reduce wind resistance.
  • Crown raising: Lifts the lower canopy for clearance over walkways, driveways, and rooflines.
  • Crown reduction: Carefully reduces the overall size of the canopy when needed — without topping.
  • Structural pruning: Trains young trees into strong, well-balanced shapes that will hold up for decades.

Why proper pruning matters

A well-pruned tree is a stronger tree. Removing weak unions, crossing limbs, and over-extended branches reduces the chance of failure during Ontario's heavy snow and wind storms. Better airflow and light penetration also discourages disease and helps the lawn and gardens beneath the tree thrive.
